The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) is a nonpartisan, non-profit organization working in the courts, legislatures and communities to defend and preserve the individual rights and liberties guaranteed to all people in this country by the Constitution and laws of the United States. With more than 2 million members, activists, and supporters, the ACLU is a nationwide organization that fights tirelessly in all 50 states, Puerto Rico, and Washington, D.C., to safeguard everyone’s rights, including achieving full equality for LGBT people, establishing new privacy protections for our digital age of widespread government surveillance, ending mass incarceration, preserving the right to vote and the right to have an abortion. The ACLU takes up the toughest civil liberties cases and issues to defend all people from government abuse and overreach.
The Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) is a non-profit international environmental advocacy group. NRDC’s work includes reducing dependence on fossil fuels by expanding clean energy across cities, states, and nations; fighting for a clean, safe, and sufficient water supply; and protecting wildlife and unspoiled lands from the threats of industrial development, commercial exploitation, pollution, and climate change. NRDC’s experts use data and science to examine critical environmental challenges and identify the most effective solutions. By mobilizing the support of partners, members, and activists (including 500 scientists, lawyers, and policy advocates across the globe) NRDC advocates for laws and policies that will protect the environment far into the future.
The International Refugee Assistance Project (IRAP)organizes law students and lawyers to develop and enforce a set of legal and human rights for refugees and displaced persons. Mobilizing direct legal aid and systemic policy advocacy, IRAP serves the world’s most persecuted individuals and empowers the next generation of human rights leaders. IRAP believes in action, accountability, innovation, and candor. By partnering law students with pro bono lawyers IRAP is able to leverage every $1 spent into $10 in legal aid. IRAP utilizes in-kind, volunteer, and student resources to provide direct services to refugees and pursue systemic advocacy. With 29 law school chapters partnered with over 75 international law firms and multinational corporations, IRAP can deploy teams of law students and lawyers to work on urgent refugee resettlement cases.
